Ahh thank you so much. And all places I will actually visit next time!
It was so funny, I was raving about the Spoonbills and someone else said “oh they breed a few miles away, we see them all the time” like I had pointed out a mere pigeon 😂
I am a member of the RSPB, as I think the work they do is extremely important: so I think you are allowed your entry fee in the same spirit. Thanks to @Burhinus, though, for the list of cheaper/free locations listed. I appreciate that not everyone can afford regular entry fees or memberships.
Oh yes it’s definitely about me writing about them, not about the fee itself. I’m a paid-up member so it’s free for me anyway, but when I started this newsletter I did emphasise everywhere would be free. It’s just a bit tricky because of my membership I do like to go to the bigger reserves, so that’s what I have photos of!
Haha I will take the compliment but in reality I was trawling for an accidental photo of a curlew sandpiper that was seen in the area. Alas, I did not get one.
I'd love to see a Pink-footed Goose. They're rare here but increasing in frequency on the east coast. Ruff is another that will show up here and there with some regularity.
So many great birds here, captured so beautifully.
As our Yellow-rumped bonanza comes to an end, it'll be time to start looking for migrating waterfowl. Some already starting to trickle in. As always, I'll be looking for my beloved Canvasback.
Apparently our Pink-Footed Geese are the entire population from Iceland and Greenland and there may be as many as half a million of them… more ‘reasons to go birding in the UK’!
Although I have to say, they aren’t especially charming (perhaps because we have so many). Though they are better than Greylags 😂
Lovely post - Titchwell is one of my absolute favourite places. And what a great photo of the spoonbills!
I have no problem at all with having to pay to access places like this. Reserves like Titchwell are so vital for wildlife (and us!), and they cost time, effort and money to manage. I think being a member of organizations like the RSPB makes absolute sense - then you can go to the reserves as often as you like, and you are supporting their vital work.
Fantastic photos! I'm unfortunately very far from Titchwell, but have seen the sanderlings in Northumberland and I adore them. Their dogged determination not to get wet is so fascinating to watch.
I second other comments as well about being an RSPB member, I think I only pay £5 a month which is well worth it!
Enjoyed the read. I was there on Wednesday to see a line Spoonbill.
Free sites or nearly, nearby. Holkham Marshes just car park to pay and same for RSPB Snettisham.
North Point Pools are free near Wells.
Salthouse Marshes are free and you can walk west along coast to Cley Marshes free but only along coast looking over marshes.
There are a few other sites

Wonderful, as always; and some fantastic images!

I love Norfolk, so rife with wildlife! And you've got incredible eyes to spot that ruff!!
