@Ni @Gem at Birdfolk

This is very topical for you and very hot off the press.

25+ Glossy Ibis have just flown on to Breydon Water South Wall Flats, nr Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

The most I have seen together in the UK is 5!

Wonderful news! Let’s hope they like what they see and decide to have families here next year

Unbelievable!

The Norfolk flock of Glossy Ibis now numbers 30 and they are near Cley Marshes, plus there is a flock of 33+ flying around the Isles of Scilly.

🥹 I saw a flock that size on the coast in Spain - never thought it might be a sight to see back here though!

I had no idea glossy ibis could be seen in this country! I’ve been very lucky to have seen them in India as they’re winter visitors. I’ll have my eyes open now

This one is at the quay quite often, and I saw one at RSPB Ham Wall and there’s one in Northampton at the moment. I am hoping they might start breeding here, they’re so different to our usual waders!

Ni

There was on along the River Alde near Snape in Suffolk today. They are predicted to be one of the next birds to breed in the UK.

Thanks, Gem – your enthusiasm and great camerawork are inspiring!

PS: Anyone who so loves the haunting call of the curlew should give the following song-cycle a try… – and I’ll recommend the Ian Partridge recording. Has been one of my favourite pieces of music for over fifty years, and never tire of hearing it (although it does make me weep; as does knowing the bird itself is endangered).

Wow - thanks for the recommendation. It's no surprise to me that the curlew has inspired such art!

Whilst you were in Devon we went to the River Alde by Iken Cliffs in Suffolk. Time and tide are important. We had lots of Black tailed Godwit, Redshank a couple of Greenshank and the star bird of the show an Osprey flying and hunting along the river.

Some days recently there have been 3 seen.

I’d have loved to see that. There was one seen at Skern Point, which is a few miles from where I went, but it was just passing by so I didn’t catch a glimpse.

I got very lucky with the tide times as I only had a small window of time to go out in - I didn’t even check them! Just went and hoped for the best 😂
