Hello, welcome! Birdfolk is a place to learn about the beautiful birds that live in the UK. It’s also home to Wild This Week, a free weekly guided walk with seasonal nature in the UK.

Why subscribe?

Until now, the best way to learn about birds was to buy a guide book and pore over the entries, one by one, or to trawl the internet for facts and stats. Not any more!

When you subscribe, you’ll get access to a bunch of posts that support you in finding and identify British birds. This includes a newsletter introducing you to one of our birds in detail every week or so. You’ll learn all about their behaviour, where to find them and – most importantly – how to identify them.

Then, you can spend some time looking out for them, before the next newsletter. It’s a slow-learning journey that ensures you remember more of what you read, so you’re ready to go out into the wild without your guide book.

Stay up-to-date

Never miss an update – every new post is sent directly to your email inbox. For a spam-free, ad-free reading experience, plus audio and community features, get the Substack app.

The community

There will, eventually, be a Birdfolk community chat, where you can share photos of birds or other wildlife you’ve seen. It’s a great place to ask for help ID’ing something. We’re not photography snobs here (though pros are welcome) – any photo of a bird is a good photo.

(Note that sharing the location of protected species will not be allowed, as there are laws in place to keep these birds safe from human interference.)
